The TEF Canada (Test d'evaluation de francais) is one of two French proficiency exams accepted by IRCC for Express Entry and Canadian immigration applications.
What is the TEF Canada?
The TEF Canada (Test d'evaluation de francais) is a standardized French language proficiency test administered by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Paris (CCIP). It is officially recognized by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for:
- Express Entry applications (Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class)
- Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)
- Canadian citizenship applications
The exam evaluates your French across 4 competencies — listening, reading, writing, and speaking — and maps your results to the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) scale from level 4 to 12.

Listening Comprehension (CO)
Listen to recordings of conversations, announcements, and interviews. Answer multiple-choice questions testing your understanding of spoken French at various speeds and registers.
Reading Comprehension (CE)
Read articles, advertisements, letters, and formal documents. Answer questions that test your ability to identify key information, infer meaning, and understand structure.
Written Expression (EE)
Write a short message or email and a longer argumentative text. Evaluated on coherence, vocabulary, grammar, and task completion — scored against CLB benchmarks by AI.
Oral Expression (EO)
Complete a guided interaction and present your opinion on a topic. Your speech is transcribed and evaluated for fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar.
TEF Canada Scoring and CLB Levels
TEF Canada scores are mapped to CLB levels, which directly convert to CRS points for Express Entry. Here's how the scoring works:
