Express Entry Pool Reaches 234,000 as Competition Intensifies
The Express Entry pool grew to 234,452 candidates by late April 2026, reversing months of contraction as new profiles outpaced draw volumes for the first time since January.
The Express Entry candidate pool grew to 234,452 profiles by April 26, 2026, according to data published by Moving2Canada and CIC News. The figure represents an increase of 897 profiles from the April 12 snapshot of 233,555, and a net gain of approximately 2,193 profiles since mid-March — marking the first period of sustained pool growth since the start of February 2026. The expansion comes as new profile entries outpace the volume of invitations being issued in draws, increasing competition across all CRS score bands.
How the Pool Grew
Between late March and late April 2026, approximately 16,000 new Express Entry profiles were created, while IRCC issued approximately 13,968 invitations across six draws during the same period. The net result was a pool that gained over 2,000 profiles despite active draw activity.
The growth reversal is significant because the pool had contracted steadily from January through late February 2026, as a high pace of draws — particularly large French-language and CEC rounds — drew down the backlog of profiles faster than new candidates were entering. The April growth suggests that a new cohort of candidates, many with mid-tier CRS scores and recent Canadian work experience, has entered the system.
CRS Score Distribution
The April 26 snapshot of the 234,452-candidate pool shows concentration at mid-range CRS scores:
| CRS Range | Approx. Candidates | Share of Pool | |-----------|-------------------|---------------| | 601–1200 | 472 | 0.2% | | 501–600 | 13,860 | 5.9% | | 451–500 | 73,659 | 31.4% | | 401–450 | 66,515 | 28.4% | | 351–400 | 52,874 | 22.6% | | 301–350 | 18,733 | 8.0% | | 0–300 | 8,339 | 3.6% |
The 451–500 band is the single largest segment of the pool, containing nearly one-third of all candidates. This is also the range that captures many CEC candidates and bilingual profiles near the French-category threshold, making it a highly watched segment.
Score Movements Between April 12 and April 26
The most notable score band movement was in the top tier. Profiles in the 601–1,200 CRS range increased by approximately 147 candidates between April 12 and April 26 — described by Moving2Canada as "a huge increase" for that tier, reversing months of gradual decline driven by recurring PNP draws that systematically remove provincial nominees from the pool.
The 401–450 range declined by 437 candidates over the same period, a drop directly attributable to the April 15 French-language draw, which issued 4,000 ITAs at a CRS cutoff of 419 and cleared a significant portion of profiles in that scoring band.
The 461–470 sub-band registered the strongest growth across any 10-point range, gaining 696 new profiles — consistent with a cohort of candidates who recently obtained IELTS or TEF Canada/TCF Canada results that pushed them into the upper-mid range.
Competitiveness Signals: CEC Draws Throttled
Alongside pool growth, the April draw data points to tightening conditions for Canadian Experience Class candidates. The April 14 CEC draw issued only 2,000 invitations at a CRS cutoff of 515 — described by CIC News as the smallest CEC draw of 2026, and the April 28 CEC draw similarly issued 2,000 ITAs at 514.
CEC scores have held in the 507–515 range throughout April, compared to 507–509 in March, a modest upward drift that reflects either a growing backlog of high-scoring CEC candidates or IRCC deliberately managing draw volumes. A pool that is growing while CEC draw sizes remain small will, if the trend continues, push CEC cutoff scores higher in subsequent rounds.
Provincial Nominee and Category-Based Draws in Late April
Three draws took place in the final week of April:
- April 27 (PNP): 473 ITAs at CRS 795
- April 28 (CEC): 2,000 ITAs at CRS 514
- April 29 (French-Language): 4,000 ITAs at CRS 400
The PNP cutoff of 795 reflects the additional CRS points granted to provincial nominees, who receive 600 points upon receiving a provincial nomination. The practical CRS baseline for these candidates before the nomination is typically in the 185–200 range. The French-language draw at 400 remains the most accessible of the three categories by raw CRS score.
What This Means for You
For candidates still building their Express Entry profile, pool growth is a cautionary signal. A larger pool with more profiles in the 451–500 range means that the CEC cutoff may trend upward in coming months unless IRCC increases draw volumes. For candidates who qualify for the French-language category, the current environment reinforces the strategic advantage of that pathway: French draws are clearing candidates at CRS scores 100 points lower than concurrent CEC draws.
The pool data also underscores the value of the bilingual CRS bonus. Candidates with strong French and English proficiency receive 56 additional CRS points, which in the current competitive landscape can be the difference between waiting in the 451–500 band and receiving an ITA in a CEC draw.
