How TEF Canada Scoring Works

TEF Canada produces four independent raw scores — one for each skill. There is no single overall TEF score. IRCC converts each raw score to a CLB/NCLC level using the table above, and your effective French level for immigration is the lowest of the four CLB levels.

This means three CLB 9 scores and one CLB 6 gives you an effective NCLC 6 — which means zero French bonus points and no access to French category-based draws. The weakest skill is the one to fix.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I convert my TEF Canada score to CLB?

Use the official IRCC conversion table. For example, a Listening score of 249–279 = CLB 7, a Reading score of 206–232 = CLB 7, and Writing/Speaking of 310–348 = CLB 7. Each skill is converted independently.

What TEF Canada score do I need for Express Entry?

You need a minimum of CLB 7 in all four skills to qualify for the French language bonus in Express Entry. CLB 7 requires: Listening ≥249, Reading ≥206, Writing ≥310, Speaking ≥310.

Does IRCC use NCLC or CLB for TEF Canada?

IRCC reports French test results as NCLC (Niveaux de compétence linguistique canadiens), which is numerically identical to CLB. NCLC 7 = CLB 7. The conversion table is the same.

How many CRS points do I get for French ability?

If all four French skills are NCLC 7+ and your English is CLB 5+, you receive 50 additional CRS points. If your English is CLB 4 or below, you still receive 25 points. Below NCLC 7 in any skill = 0 bonus points.

What is the minimum TEF score for CLB 7 in each section?

For CLB 7: Listening minimum is 249/360, Reading minimum is 206/300, Writing minimum is 310/450, Speaking minimum is 310/450.

Can I see which skill is dragging my CLB down?

Yes — your effective CLB for Express Entry is your lowest individual skill score. This converter highlights your weakest skill so you know exactly where to focus your preparation.
